The Local Payment Method settings page is one of the most heavily trafficked pages on Stripe's Dashboard platform. There hadn't been a way for Stripe users to figure out why their payment methods that they've turned on aren't actually visible to their customers.
No alerts or reminders were being surfaced around this – if the business did manage to find out that a payment method wasn't live, it was difficult to know how to fix it.
This led to more than 65% dropoff in payment method adoption between activation and usage, which resulted in more than $20M lost annual payment volume.
By surfacing local payment method errors in a visual way, we gave non-technical users autonomy and control to be able to fix critical issues with their business's Checkout integration on their own.
I led the design of the tool, presenting concepts frequently to design leadership for visibility, and working cross functionally with product management and engineering to vet technical constraints and feasibility.
The outcomes of this work were beneficial for both the business and Stripe's users. Getting back some of the pay-in volume (estimated around $20M loss annually) was one thing, but an additional long term impact was making troubleshooting Checkout easier for people, creating a higher level of trust for Stripe's less technical users.
This work launched in Q1 of 2023.
